Organic Leather

What Is Organic Leather?

Each raw hide used in production by PHILIPPE & PATRICE can be directly traced back to its origin: organically raised cattle. The cattle are pasture raised, grass fed and ethically treated. No nitrogen fertilizers are used on the farms. Typically, organic leather hides are mixed in with all other non-organically traced hides in general production.

All leather used in the production of PHILIPPE & PATRICE luxury goods is organically certified, raised in Germany by one of the most environmentally friendly suppliers around. The leather used in production by PHILIPPE & PATRICE is certified by IVNBiokreis and ECARF as environmentally friendly. The leather has also been tested and approved as allergy-free.

Chrome vs. Vegetable Tanned Leather

We at PHILIPPE & PATRICE believe that the leather tanning process must be just as environmentally friendly as the source of the leather itself. The majority of leather produced today (chrome tanning method) is tanned using highly toxic processes involving numerous heavy metals as well as formaldehyde, sodium sulphide, glutaraldenhyde and sulphuric acid.

Our vegetable tanned leather is tanned using tannins and other ingredients found in different vegetable matter, such as Tara, Valonea and rhubarb. This method is kinder to both the environment as well as the human body. The natural tanning process takes any where from 6 weeks to 12 months depending on the process to achieve the desired end product.
